WDS Service Programs

Empowering Communities Through Education, Prevention, and Compassionate Care

At the Women’s Dermatologic Society, service is central to our mission. Since 2004, the WDS Service Program has provided essential outreach to communities across the United States—advancing public education, health equity, and dermatologic care through compassionate volunteerism.

We are proud to lead two signature initiatives that promote skin health, sun safety, and total women’s wellness through the unique lens of dermatology.

Play Safe in the Sun

Play Safe in the Sun is the WDS’s flagship public outreach initiative, delivering sun safety and skin cancer prevention education to communities from coast to coast. Through local and national events, WDS members engage directly with the public at schools, parks, sporting venues, and community centers—providing sun protection resources, skin health education, and tips for early detection of skin cancer.

Combining the grassroots reach of our former Coast-2-Coast efforts with the well-established Play Safe in the Sun program, this unified initiative allows for a greater collective impact and consistent messaging around UV safety and preventive dermatologic care.

Women’s Shelter Initiative (TIPP)

Launched in 2018, the Women’s Shelter Initiative, part of the Total Women’s Health Through the Dermatology Gateway Program (TIPP), brings essential dermatologic care and education to women experiencing housing insecurity or transitional living. Partnering with shelters and local organizations, WDS members provide free skin screenings, health resources, and personal care guidance—addressing broader women's health needs with empathy and expertise.
