San Francisco, CA (March 18, 2009) - The Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS) announces that pediatric dermatologist Ilona Frieden, MD, was presented with the prestigious Rose Hirschler Award at its 34th Annual Meeting Luncheon held recently during the American Academy of Dermatology’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
Named in honor of the first woman dermatologist in the United States, the Rose Hirschler Award has been given by WDS each year since 1988 to extraordinary physicians who have made significant contributions to medicine and to the dermatologic specialty, whose achievements have enhanced the role of women in dermatology.
Dr. Frieden is Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics and currently serves as Chief of Pediatric Dermatology at the University of California- San Francisco, where she attended medical school and in 1977 began residencies in both dermatology and pediatrics. Dr. Frieden has served on the Board of Directors of the Women’s Dermatologic Society, and received the WDS Mentor of the Year award in 2005. Dr. Frieden’s many contributions to the field of pediatric dermatology have had an enormous impact on pediatric patient care. She has authored more than 175 publications and co-edited a textbook, Neonatal Dermatology, which is an outstanding resource for all who practice pediatric dermatology. Currently, she is a co-editor of the Journal of Pediatric Dermatology.

The Women's Dermatologic Society supports the careers and professional development of women dermatologists.
