t has been a privilege and pleasure to serve as your president over this past year of progress, projects and achievements. You, the member of this vibrant organization of more than 1,600 members, make all the difference with your enthusiastic interest and participation.
We celebrate the 5th anniversary of the incorporation of service and community outreach into our mission. Nearly 25% of our membership has participated in WDS outreach activities, which have educated people of all ages and ethnicities. We have been active messengers, generating an estimated 720 million media messages! Under the guidance of Marie-France Demierre, MD and Suephy Chen, MD, an institutional review board-approved assessment of the impact of our outreach affirms that our efforts are making a difference. Stay tuned as the paper is being finalized.
We celebrate the 16th anniversary of our Mentorship Program, which has been emulated by other groups. The Mentorship Committee, under the leadership of Sarah Weitzul, MD, granted 34 awards in 2008, bringing the current total to over 400 mentorship grant recipients. We thank Fran Storrs, MD for founding this program and June Robinson, MD for finding a source of funding. An institutional review board-approved assessment of this program is nearing completion; so, again, watch for more details.
In a banner year of grants, 85 dermatologists and medical students received $252,610 in 2008. These awards can help make a great difference in the personal and professional development of individuals.
It was a year marked by new projects, including the development of an AAD Gold Triangle Award-winning educational documentary, America’s Ethnic Skin: an Al Roker Health Special, which aired nationally on prime-time television. This program featured the expertise of several WDS members and the participation of their patients. Lastly, the Petals and Pearls keepsake book project is well underway with enthusiastic input from many members.
The hallmark of WDS is our “can do, will do, well done” spirit! All of these activities have been achieved by active participation of the 30 committees and the Board. It is truly an honor to have served as your President!
