hat is worth doing, is worth doing well,” reads an inscription on an ancient small bowl displayed in the new Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar. When asked which piece in the collection was the most significant to him, the curator responded that it was this bowl. The statement spans all time, all regions and all activities of mankind; how uplifting to do even the simplest task well. This seems to be an appropriate proverb for our Society. With the very able assistance of our WDS staff, our members have excelled in many events this season.
WDS volunteers light up Times Square while news of the outreach and Paula Creamer’s victory made headlines all over the USA.

Our Play Safe in the Sun campaign sponsored by L'Oréal USA continues to bloom! The fourth event, chaired by Dr. Mary Spellman, was held at the LPGA’s Samsung World Championship in Northern California. We initiated a questionnaire to assess the impact of our educational efforts and eagerly await the results of this study. Our spokesperson, LPGA Tour player Paula Creamer, won this tournament! A photo of some of our volunteers was picked up widely by the press and shown on the huge screen at Times Square! The best score, however, was achieved by the terrific volunteers who participated. Dermatology nurses made the skin cancer screenings flow smoothly; dermatologists new to the area who wanted to meet and work with colleagues gave time away from their practices and family demands; and some dermatologists made the booth activity a family affair. Teaching our children about volunteerism will surely reap rewards for all society, not just WDS. At press time, the final event for the 2008 outreach season had successfully taken place in West Palm Beach, FL, co-chaired by Drs. Marta Rendon and De Anne Collier.
Dermatology is a global specialty with strong ties internationally and WDS is fortunate to be a part of this. In September, I was honored to represent WDS at a luncheon meeting in Paris held by the European WDS and provide an historical update of our Society. This event, hosted by their President, Dr. Fenella Wojnaroska, was attended by EuWDS and WDS members from around the world. Dr. Yaxian Zhen, a dermatologist from Shanghai, provided a fascinating presentation on dermatology in China. This camaraderie and energy can surely lead to future joint activities and projects.
Seven networking events held across the country this season have promoted our relationships and attracted new members. Thank you to the hostesses of these events! Our Networking Committee, under the guidance of Dr. Alysa Herman, is developing ideas to enhance these gatherings and strengthen our Society. Other committees, including those for the annual luncheon, nominations, membership, mentorship, international affairs and more are busy with their work.
We have evolved from a small collegial group focused on fostering the careers of women in dermatology to the third largest dermatologic organization in the United States with an array of personal development and community outreach programs over the thirty-five years since our founding.
WDS members are characterized by a bevy of enviable “C”s: Collaborative, Creative, Collegial, Capable, Congenial, Caring and Captivating. You make WDS so successful and all of our activities done so very well. Without our generous sponsors and YOU, we could not achieve so much. Oh, yes, and Bill Gates, too: electrons are the key to our collaborative, efficient efforts! Uh-oh, he is not yet a member!
