In recognition of her outstanding role as a mentor to legions of dermatologists, other physicians, medical students, and undergraduates, the Women's Dermatologic Society awards Frances J. Storrs, MD the first WDS Mentorship Award.
Dr. Storrs was graduated from Carleton College in Minnesota in 1960 and Cornell Medical College in New York City in 1964. After a rotating internship at Good Samaritan Hospital, she completed residency training at the Oregon Health and Science University. Dr. Storrs joined the faculty at Oregon in 1969 and although she became Professor, Emerita in 1997, she continues to be very active in resident and medical student teaching and is Director of the Contact and Occupational Dermatitis Clinic.
Over the past 45 years, Dr. Storrs has mentored over 20 dermatologists in her contact dermatitis clinics, including three recipients of WDS Mentorship Awards. She has formally mentored medical students and undergraduates, including many who worked with her as research assistants. She continues to serve as one of two Ombudsmen for medical students at the Oregon Health and Science University, and has contributed to numerous committees at her University, as well as in our dermatologic professional societies. In recognition of her numerous civic contributions, Dr. Storrs was the City Club of Portland's Citizen of the Year in 2001.
Dr. Storrs was selected as the 1991 Rose Hirschler Award Recipient. She donated the honorarium from the Award to our Society to establish the mentorship program. Her vision, coupled with the efforts of the WDS leadership and the generosity of Dermik Laboratories, established our highly successful WDS Mentorship Program. Now in it's 11th year, the WDS Mentorship program has become a model in our specialty for mentorship programs.
For her commitment to and able demonstration of mentoring, the Women's Dermatologic Society is proud to present the first WDS Mentorship Award to Frances J. Storrs, MD.
