WHAT IS THE WDS?
The Women's Dermatologic Society supports the careers and professional development of women dermatologists. |
HOW DOES IT DO THIS?
It does this is many ways, but mostly by creating a place for women dermatologist to find the support of others who do what they do. This is an organization that provides funding to bring younger dermatologists together with leaders in the field who are willing to mentor them. It is also an organization that reaches out to the community to raise awareness of the needs for diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders. |
HOW DOES IT REACH OUT TO THE COMMUNITY?
Two examples: The WDS recognized that among women athletes, women golfers have the highest incidence of skin cancer. So the WDS reached out to the LPGA to do free skin cancer screenings at tournaments around the country. These events draw media attention and further spread the message of the importance of diagnosis and treatment. In addition, WDS has just embarked on a nationwide community service program (through a $1M grant from the 3M Foundation) focused on raising awareness about good skin health practices and skin safety in under-served populations. |
WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR A "WOMEN'S" DERMATOLOGIC SOCIETY?
Women in this profession have the need to learn from one another about topics such as balancing family and career. Due to raising families, women are more likely to move in and out of the workforce, thus the need for a strong support network is critical to their ability to advance their career at many different stages. The WDS supports the unique needs of women in this profession and propels them into leadership roles that might not otherwise open up to them. |
