Thanks to the generous sponsorship support of Ortho-Neutrogena, the WDS launched a new program in 2006 to provide research grants in the amounts of $3,000 - $8,000 each to residents and young physicians. The grant is intended to focus mainly on women’s health issues where further clinical and basic research is needed. The grant is intended to assist a resident or young dermatologist in the furthering of their academic career.

2009 WDS Academic Research Grant Application
(Deadline for 2009 Awards: November 30, 2008)



(Guidelines and Criteria for Selection)
  • Resident in an accredited dermatology training program -or--
  • Young dermatologist who is board-certified or board-eligible and who is within the first three years after completing post-graduate training
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to skin research, either clinical or basic science
  • Appropriate training in biomedical research or mentor available for instruction in this area (letter of commitment from the mentor must accompany application)
  • Strong institutional commitment for the individual’s career development (letter of commitment from the academic institution must accompany application)
  • Preference for residents and young dermatologists with no other sources of funding
  • A summary of research results must be submitted at the end of the project for publication in the WDS newsletter
  • Research grant awards must be to used within two years of receipt

The WDS Academic Dermatologist Interest Group (described above) will assume the responsibility reviewing grant applications, making funding recommendations, and monitoring the grants program.



When the WDS formed its Mentorship Program in 1993; the first grants awarded totaled nearly $23,000. In 2007, WDS awarded $66,000 in Mentorship grants.


Inaugural Session Of The WDS Academic Dermatologist Interest Group was held on March 3th, 2006 during the AAD annual meeting in San Francisco. An overwhelming response to this initiative was manifested by having more than 50 academic dermatologists from around the country participating in the session (MORE...)
