“Play Safe in the Sun” spokesperson Angela Jerman, an up-and-coming young LPGA Tour golf professional, urges her fellow players and the general population to take routine precautions to guard against the heightened risks of prolonged sun exposure. As she comments, “It’s so important to faithfully practice sun protection measures, get checked regularly by your dermatologist and if you’re out enjoying a round of golf, be sure to re-apply sunscreen every nine holes!”
In the United States, one million new diagnoses of skin cancer are projected for 2004. Alarmingly, melanoma is the leading form of cancer among young women, ages 25-29. If caught in its earliest stages, melanoma is highly treatable.
According to WDS President Dr. Sandra Readmedical expert and member of American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and Georgetown University faculty“Overexposure to the sun is the most preventable cause of skin cancer, so we urge people to make the commitment to safeguard their health.” Under AAD recommendations, this includes: sun avoidance during the peak hours of 10am-4pm; liberal application of a high SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen to all exposed areas of the body and face; wearing sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sun-glasses, and regular visits to your dermatologist.
Dr. Marta I. Rendon, a board-certified dermatologist with the Boca Raton Dermatology and Aesthetic Center who is a WDS member and the local event host, concurs that people of all ages should take proactive steps to protect against the sun. “Careful and thorough skin cancer prevention practices must become a way of life, not only for people who live in sunnier climates like ours but for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.” As she points out, “even cloudy skies and partly cloudy days can pose risks for sun damage. I am happy to participate in this effort to increase awareness of this serious disease, and how to prevent it.”
The WDS Skin Cancer Screenings are part of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) National Skin Cancer Volunteer Screening Initiative. Screenings during the ADT Championship in West Palm Beach will be conducted by Board-certified dermatologists in the WDS Exhibition area of the Fan Pavilion at Trump International Golf Club on Thursday, November 18, 10 a.m.-Noon and 1-3p.m.; Friday, November 19, 9-11 am and 1-3 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 9 -11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. and Sunday, November 21, 9 a.m.-Noon. AAD educational materials and free sunscreen samples will also be provided.
Angela Jerman’s role as spokesperson for “Play Safe in the Sun” is made possible through collaborative work with Dermik Laboratories. Funding for “Play Safe in the Sun” at selected LPGA tournaments is generously provided by Procter & Gamble, which also contributes products along with Galderma, Ortho-Neutrogena and Del-Ray Dermatologicals.
