WDS Celebrates 30 Fabulous Years
By Lisa Garner, MD

The annual meeting luncheon of the Women’s Dermatologic Society on Sunday, February 20th in New Orleans was a celebration of our society and membership. Under the direction of the chairs of the Annual Meeting Committee, Deirdre O'Boyle Hooper, MD and Nia Terezakis, MD, the luncheon meeting was themed “30 years of Cultivating Precious Pearls”, the pearl being the traditional gift for a 30th anniversary.

After welcoming members and guests, WDS president Sandra Read, MD premiered a new WDS video whose production was guided by Pearl Grimes, MD. The video highlighted the beginnings of women in medicine, the history of the WDS, and the current and future goals of our society through interviews with several of the founding members and presidents. Dr. Grimes’ enthusiasm, spirit and dedication have rewarded the WDS with a wonderful new documentary that will be available for showing during various WDS networking events.

Three members received special awards during the luncheon. James S. Taylor, MD introduced Patricia Engasser, MD, this year’s recipient of the
Rose Hirschler Award. Did you know that our own Pat was Hollywood child star Patsy Nash? Yes, she was and she starred in eight Hollywood films. Images from her films were shown at the luncheon. Dr. Engasser stated that her friendships with other women dermatologists gave her “inspiration and strength”, making her career “from not only fulfilling but also fun”.

In accepting the
Mentor of the Year Award, Ilona Frieden, MD, spoke of the rewards of being a mentor commenting “the exception between mentoring to parenting is the much more immediate gratification. They actually want to hear what you have to say”.

Dr. Read presented the
WDS President’s Award to Lenore Kakita, MD in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the society.

As is our tradition, the keynote speaker, author and journalist Julia Reed, took us away from the intense medicine and dermatology of the AAD annual meeting. Author of the Queen of the Turtle Derby, she entertained members and guests with tales of women she has known and women about whom she has written. If “laughter is the best medicine”, then most of us were a little healthier when we left the meeting.

In passing the gavel to the 2005 incoming president, Jean Bolognia, MD, Dr. Read stated, “She’s taught me to never accept the status quo.” Dr. Bolognia closed the meeting looking forward to an exciting new year for the Women’s Dermatologic Society.
